Medicare FAQ - Common Questions for Seniors in Ohio

General Medicare Questions

What is Medicare and who qualifies for it?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily for people age 65 or older. It’s also available to some younger individuals with certain disabilities or serious health conditions. Most people become eligible the month they turn 65.

When should I start the Medicare enrollment process?

You can enroll during your Initial Enrollment Period, which begins 3 months before your 65th birthday and ends 3 months after. Starting early ensures you avoid delays or late penalties.

How do I apply for my Medicare card?

You can apply for your Medicare card at ssa.gov/medicare, ideally no sooner than 3 months before your 65th birthday. You’ll need your Medicare card before enrolling in a plan, so starting early helps keep the process smooth and stress-free.

What’s the difference between Medicare Part A, Part B, Part C, and Part D?

Part A covers hospital care. Part B covers doctor visits and outpatient services. Part C (Medicare Advantage) is a private plan that combines A & B, often with extra benefits. Part D is prescription drug coverage

What happens if I miss my initial enrollment period?

Missing your initial window can lead to late penalties and a delay in coverage. However, there are special enrollment periods for certain situations, like losing employer coverage.

Do I need Medicare if I’m still working at 65?

It depends on your employer coverage. If your plan is considered “creditable”, you might delay enrolling in Part B without penalty.

Choosing a Plan

How do I know which Medicare Plan is right for me?

The right plan for you will depend on your doctors, prescriptions, travel habits, and budget. From there, I can help compare annual costs (including premiums), coverage limits, and network rules.

What’s the difference between Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement (Medigap)

Medicare Advantage (Part C) bundles coverage through private plan rules. Medical pairs with Original Medicare to lower out-of-pocket costs and offers broad provider access, but usually doesn’t include extras and requires a separate Part D plan.

Can I keep my doctor?

It depends on the plan’s network. Before you enroll, we’ll verify your providers are in-network (for Advantage) or, if you choose Medigap, confirm they accept Medicare.

Will my prescriptions be covered?

Each plan has a formulary that lists covered drugs and tiers. I will check your exact medications and preferred pharmacy to estimate real monthly costs and look for lower cost alternatives when available.

Can I change plans later if my needs change?

Yes. You can review and change coverage during Annual Enrollment Period and in certain Special Enrollment Periods (for qualifying life events). I’ll help you know how and when to switch.

Cost & Coverage

Is there a cost for Medicare Part A and Part B?

Most people pay no premium for Part A; Part B has a monthly premium that’s set each year and income could affect the premium amount. Deductible and coinsurance also apply - your total costs depend on the plan you choose.

Are there penalties for enrolling late?

Yes. Late enrollment in part B or Part D can add permanent penalties. If you have qualifying employer coverage, you may be able to delay without penalty.

What out-of-pocket costs should I expect?

Advantage plans often have copays and an annual out-of-pocket maximum. Medigap aims to reduce most Medicare-approved costs but has a higher monthly premium. I will estimate your total yearly spend either way.

Does Medicare cover dental, vision, or hearing?

Original Medicare is limited in these areas. Some Advantage plans include routine dental, vision, and hearing benefits. We’ll compare options if these benefits are important to you.

Are there programs to help with costs?

Yes - Extra Help and Medicare Savings Programs can lower premiums, deductibles, and drug costs if you qualify. We’ll screen for eligibility and assist with applications.

Working with Mindy

What does it cost to work with you?

My guidance is no cost to you. I’m paid by the insurance companies if you enroll - never by my clients - so my advice stays focused on your needs.

How are you different from other agents?

With over 30 years in social work and senior care, I bring a deep understanding of the needs and concerns facing individuals as they approach Medicare. As an independent agent, I work with a wide range of insurance providers, allowing me to offer unbiased guidance and find a plan that truly fits your unique situation. My approach is grounded in building long-term relationships — not just completing a one-time enrollment.

Will you help me review my plan each year?

Yes. I offer annual reviews and check-ins when your health, prescriptions, or budget changes. - so your coverage keeps up with your life.

Who do you work with?

People turning 65, retirees transition from employer coverage, those considering a plan change, and caregivers assisting loved ones.

Do you offer in-person or virtual appointments?

Both. I serve Northeast Ohio with office visits and phone/video appointments for convenience. We’ll choose whatever works best for you.

What should I bring to our first meeting?

A list of medications and dosages, preferred pharmacies, your doctors/specialists, and any current insurance cards. This helps us provide precise comparisons.
